The Taranaki Secondary School Basketball League is a vibrant and inclusive competition open to all students in Years 9 to 13 attending secondary schools across the region. With dedicated male and female competitions, the leagues are split into:

  • Juniors – Years 9 & 10
  • Seniors – Years 11 to 13

Currently, 12 secondary schools participate, playing across 10 venues throughout Taranaki. The league operates on a home-and-away format, giving teams the exciting opportunity to travel and compete at different school venues — building camaraderie and regional pride.

  • Senior games are held on Monday nights
  • Junior games take place on Thursday nights

Beyond the competition, the league offers valuable development pathways. Senior students are encouraged to get involved in coaching and refereeing on nights they’re not playing — gaining leadership experience and skills that extend beyond the court.

The league runs during Terms 2 and 3, culminating in school finals held just before Secondary School Tournament Week in September. Schools are encouraged to use the league as preparation for the ‘AA’ and ‘A’ Secondary School Qualifying Tournaments, which lead to the most prestigious event on the school basketball calendar — the Secondary School Nationals.

Whether you're aiming for national competition or simply love the game, the Taranaki Secondary School League is your platform to grow, compete, and connect through basketball.
