Our Story

Basketball Taranaki Inc. (BTI) was officially established on December 21, 2012, when passionate individuals from Taranaki Country Basketball and the New Plymouth Basketball Association came together with a shared vision. United by the goals of the 2012 BBNZ All of Basketball Plan, they formed BTI as a non-profit incorporated society, aiming to bring together the region’s top basketball talent to compete in BBNZ National Age Group Tournaments.

Over the years, our reach and impact have grown significantly.

In 2018, Basketball Taranaki expanded its operations to include:

  • The Taranaki Secondary School League
  • The Taranaki 3x3 Secondary School League
  • Development representative teams
  • Holiday camps
  • Development academies
  • Referee and coaching development
  • In-school coaching programmes

These initiatives laid the foundation for a more inclusive and structured basketball pathway across the region.

A major milestone came in 2021, when members of NPBA and TCB voted to transition BTI into a Regional Sporting Organisation (RSO), officially recognised by Basketball New ZealandSport New Zealand, and key funding bodies. This transformation unlocked direct membership with BBNZ and access to vital funding resources, enabling BTI to employ staff and take bold steps toward a sustainable future.

With this evolution, our membership expanded to include the Mountainairs and Thunder teams — both competing in the National Basketball League (NBL). Associations from StratfordOpunake, and Hawera joined forces with the NBL teams, forming the foundation of the new RSO and strengthening basketball’s presence across Taranaki.

Today, Basketball Taranaki continues to grow, guided by our vision “to be the sport of choice for life.” We are proud to foster a basketball community built on excellenceopportunity, and values — where everyone has a place, and every player has a pathway.
