Referees

Referees are a critical part of playing the game of basketball. They are there to ensure the rules are followed and the players, coaches and spectators all participate in a safe and healthy environment.

In our local leagues played around the region,  two referees officiate in each game. As you move up into the Mens and Womens National Leagues, the number of officials increases to three referees for each game.

If you are interested in becoming a referee, there is a BBNZ online course which takes you through the fundamentals of refereeing a game. This level 1 course is followed up with a practical assessment which, if you pass the requisite criteria, you can become a qualified or 'badged' referee. There are plenty of opportunities to utilise your refereeing skills in leagues played at our member associations leagues and also for the Taranaki Secondary School league run by Basketball Taranaki.

Click on the 'Referee Pathway' link to find about more about becoming a referee.

Feel free also to email Basketball Taranaki at admin@basketballtaranaki.co.nz if you would like more information.
